Cleaning Day Checklist

Preparing your home for sale does not need to include expensive and extensive renovations.

In most cases a good, thorough cleaning will help your home show at its best.

Be sure to pick up and put away toys, clothes, shoes, books and magazines, and any other items that tend to acculumate in daily life.

Box up and store items that you know you will not immediately need.  Create as much open space as you can in all of the living areas.

Here is a checklist of some items that usually require special attention on your get-ready-for-market cleaning day:

General

 
  Door handles and door knobs – clean off all finger smudges

  Top edge of doors – dust and clean

  Door frames – dust and clean

  Window frames – dust and clean

  Window sills – duct and clean off all finger smudges

  Window handles or cranks – dust and clean off all finger smudges

  Light fixtures – remove cover and wash if possible

  Ceiling fans – wash or dust all fan blades

  Ceiling – remove dust or cobwebs in corners

  Dust heater and a/c air vents and returns – dust and clean

  Top of baseboards – dust and clean

  Plate rails – dust and clean

  Frames of any hanging artwork – dust and clean

  Light switches – clean off all finger smudges

  Light switch plate covers – clean off all finger smudges

  Top of all cabinets and bookshelves – dust and clean

  All shelves and flat surfaces to the edge – dust and clean

  Window blinds – dust and clean each slat

  Window curtains – launder or hang new

   
Baths

 
  Mirrors – clean off all finger smudges

  Tile – clean off all build-up

  Shower doors – clean off all finger smudges and build-up

  Shower curtains – launder or hang new

  Floor – thoroughly clean

  Fixtures – clean off all finger smudges and build-up

   
Kitchen

 
  All appliances – clean off all finger smudges and greasy build-up

  Pay special attention to all handles and control knobs

  Sinks and countertops – thoroughly clean
